When does a year start?

In Japan, fiscal year starts in April and ends in March. This month is quite busy season in Japan preparing for new life.

A year in old Japan used to start in September following the U.S system. However, it changed from September to April.

There are two reasons. First of all, the Japan army changed the opening day of notification which is to join the army from September to April. Secondary, financial year also changed like the above. Consequently, schools which are given subsidy from a prefecture and country had to change the entrance month to April. (students in Japan have entrance ceremony in April and graduation ceremony in March.)

I bet fiscal year is very different in the world. When years start in your country?

I don't know about fiscal year, but school start is different from state to state here in Germany. But generally you can say, summer holidays ends in mid or end of August. They are changing they're grade after summer holidays and the entrance is also after summer holidays.

In my state, I will graduate in June this year, but the exams starts already in May. My first workday is Aug. 21th.

Very interesting!

Here in the UK, the financial year starts on 6th April, but other years start on January 1st. But then, the academic year generally starts in August/September.

Thank you for your comment, Mark.

It is interesting that starting time is divided in your country!

Japan changed fiscal year from September to April in the 19th year of Meiji. So in 1886.

Hi Kayano,

here in my state, summer holidays are about 6 weeks long. In other states in Germany there are maybe some differences.

In my state its like this:

Summer holiday - 6 weeks
Autumn holiday (October) - 2 weeks
Christmas and New Years holiday - 1 or 2 weeks
Winter holiday (February) - 2 weeks
Spring holiday (Easter time) - 1 week

Hi, fabi.

Ausome! You have Autumn holiday and Christmas and New Year holiday!

In Japan, there are Summer holiday,Winter holiday and Sprig holiday. Its term is depending on the schools and areas, but almost same.

In my junior high school,
Summer holiday is about 5 weeks
Winter holiday is 3 weeks
Spring holiday is 3 weeks

The best before the university (or the worst, depending on the point of view :-p) is in France:
Summer holiday - 2 monthes
Autumn holiday (October) - 10 days
Christmas holiday - 2 weeks
Winter holiday (February) - 2 weeks
Spring holiday (Easter) - 2 week

After High school, the holidays are different according to where you study (the education system after High school in France is very complicated).

It is nice to have 2 monthes summer holiday!

Is there any reason?

In my hometown, winter holiday is longer than the other school in south area considering bad transportaition of snow.

I must admit that I don't know why we have 2 monthes in summer ^^
Even if it's not the main reason, the tourism economy is a very important thing for France, almost 7% of the GDP, and the French go touring in France during the summer holiday. It would be a bad thing for the tourism economy if the French had less holidays :-p

In some part of Belgium they have also two monthes in summer, but they have less holidays than the French during the rest of the year.

Its crazy all the different times things start around the world *laughs*. Here in the USA most schools start in early September and end mid-June then we have half of June, all July, and August for sumer vacation. And for one week in winter and spring we have winter/spring break.
Our year ends on December 31 at midnight, and our new year begins on January 1st.

Good day, sun shines!
There have were times of hardship when I felt unhappy missing knowledge about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never thought that there weren't any need in large initial investment.
Now, I feel good, I begin take up real money.
It's all about how to choose a proper companion who utilizes your money in a right way - that is incorporate it in real business, and shares the income with me.

You can ask, if there are such firms? I'm obliged to answer the truth, YES, there are. Please be informed of one of them:
