Onomatopoeia –Sounds in Life-

1, Sound of rain

・Light rain…Parapara (パラパラ)
・Heavy rain…Zâ zâ (ザーザー)


2, Sound of a clock

…Chiku-taku(チクタク), Kachi-kachi(カチカチ)


3, Sound of knock

…Ton-ton(トントン)


4, Sound of thunder


…Goro-goro(ゴロゴロ)


5, Sound of splash


…Zabun(ザブン), Bashan(バシャン)


Now, south Japan is having rainy season which called 梅雨(Tsuyu). This month is a little depressing but here is cute children song using sounds of rain which has been sung from old time.

Song: Amefuri
“Ame Ame Fure Fure Kahsanga Janomede Omukai Ureshiina
Pichi Pichi Chapu Chapu Lan Lan Lan”

Rain more, I am happy that mom comes to me with Janome (an old Japanese traditional umbrella). Pichi Pichi Chapu Chapu (sounds of stepping puddle) Lan Lan Lan (shows happy feeling).

Interesting. In French, we very few onomatopoeia in normal language. Most are just used in BD (comics). In fact, I look on internet for some of them.

1, Sound of rain

PLOC-FLOC or FLIP-FLIP, I didn't remember it.

2, Sound of a clock

TIC-TAC (very similar to the first japanese)


3, Sound of knock

Toc-toc (also similar)


4, Sound of thunder

BAOUMBADABOUM (I didn't know it)

SCRAAAATCH for lightning


5, Sound of splash
